POSITION:

Summer Playground Counselor

REPORTS TO:

Director Parks & Recreation, and Program Supervisor     

SALARY RANGE:

$10.00 - $13.25 per hour, based on experience 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Age – 16 and older

Certifications—CPR, and Basic First Aid certification 

NH parental/school permission form (working papers, if 16)

JOB SUMMARY:

The Playground Counselor’s main duty is to facilitate a fun and positive camp atmosphere while promoting camper engagement and safety. They will be in charge of handling the day-to-day activities of the campers, monitoring participant behavior, and cleaning and disinfecting the facility. Successful playground counselors will be proactive in reading situations and interactions and will intervene to prevent problems from occurring and will be able to handle stressful situations. If problems do arise, the counselor will handle them professionally and positively.

OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains effective relationships with other staff, participants, and supervisors.

  2. Able to communicate with participants and parents in a professional manner.

  3. Able to direct, design, and lead group games or activities in order to maintain the interest of the group.

  4. Able to create rapport with participants (learning their names, interests, behaviors, etc.)

  5. Able to handle difficult situations that may arise throughout the day.

  6. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Parks and Recreation policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.

  7. Knows, understands, and consistency applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the playground program.

  8. Report to work on time and follow appropriate leadership behaviors throughout the day.

  9. Attends all staff meetings, trainings, and special functions as required.

  10. Be dressed in appropriate attire and wear closed toe shoes (sneakers).

  11. Preform any duty required by the program supervisor.

  1. Must be able to remain alert.

  2. Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.

  3. Must be able to lift heavy objects 45lbs or greater.

  4. Must be able to move quickly with twisting and bending movement.

  5. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.

  6. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary in childcare environment.

  7. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.

  8. Ability to be in the outdoor elements for long periods of time.
