Lifeguard

REPORTS TO:

Director Parks & Recreation, and Program Supervisor     

SALARY RANGE:

$10.00 - $15.00 per hour, based on experience  

JOB SUMMARY:

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas.  Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes customer safety and engagement in accordance with Town policies and procedures.

SPECIALIZED, TECHNICAL, OR PRACTICAL HOW TO:

"On duty" means being prepared at every moment, maintaining an attitude of alertness and of guarding lives at all times.  A good lifeguard will anticipate the need for his/her help.  He/she will be aware of weak swimmers and those who demonstrate poor judgment.  The lifeguard on duty will work to prevent situations that can lead to accidents.  In carrying out his/her duties, the lifeguard will seek to maintain good personal relationships with the customers.  The lifeguard will encourage cooperation and safe behavior, and he/she will explain the rationale behind the pool rules as necessary.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum age of 16.

  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification. 

  3. Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding

  4. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.

  5. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with town of Goffstown Park & Recreation standards.

OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.

  2. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Parks and Recreation policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.

  3. Maintains effective relationships with the participants and other staff.

  4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.

  5. Maintains accurate records as required by the Parks and Recreation and/or the state Health Department code.

  6. Teach Swim Lesson for four weeks, if applicable.

  7. Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.

  8. Check the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival and throughout the shift.

  9. Perform chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action.

  10. Attends all staff meetings, training, and special functions as required.

Safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas is maintained.  A safe and positive atmosphere is created that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with Parks and Recreation policies and procedures. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

  1. Ability to pass lifeguard water test.

  2. Must be able to remain alert.

  3. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.

  4. Must be able to be in outdoor elements for a long period of time.

  5. Must be able to lift heavy object 50lbs or greater.

  6. Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.

  7. Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.

  8. Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.

  9. Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
